52 Week project « Read Less
I want to document my last year as a teenager in this project. I thought about doing a 365 day project, but I kind of dropped the ball immediately. Then I decided to do 52 weeks, but Buzznet got sick, so I'm starting it late.
Week 1
I figured I'd start out with a selfie of how I look at 19. Technically, My birthday was about 4 weeks ago, but due to Buzznet's issues the last month, I had to start today. I'll try to recap what happened the first week.
So my birthday was Saturday, January 5th. The day before, I moved back into my dorm for the winter quarter. One of my 3 roommates moved back home for good and she's commuting and the other 2 weren't there yet, so I was by myself the first couple of nights. My birthday was pretty good. I stayed up the night before with the few people who were in the dorm already. On my birthday, more people moved in. Most of my friends here didn't know it was my birthday because unfortunately for me, it falls during that time inbetween winter break and school starting, so I'm used to people forgetting it. Plus, everyone was busy and tired moving in. However, it was nice to see all of my college friends again.
In the evening, my good friend Nikki came over to my dorm and she introduced me to some people from the 2nd floor. We all went out to Lou Malnati's for dinner along with my friend Justin and a couple of his friends. Lou's has the true Chicago style pizza and it's delicious. Afterwards, I went back to my dorm and watched Pitch Perfect in a friend's room which was hilarious. Then Annie asked me to go with her to a party. I haven't gone to many college parties, but I figured it was my birthday, so why not. It was at an apartment and it was incredibly crowded. All of my friends were drunk of course. I decided to get drunk as well for the first time. Now just to let you all know, it was my decision and I wasn't pressured. I've been really good about that sort of thing and I wanted to let loose for my birthday. I also have good control over how much I drink, I know when to stop, and I always have a lot of friends there to look out for me and make sure I get home. I actually had fun and I also found $20 on the floor of the apartment which was pretty cool. The only not fun part was I had to take Juan home, and he was worse than I was. He ended up throwing up on the El which was disgusting.
The next day, I went out to dinner with my aunt Maureen, who lives about a mile away from me. We went to a vegan restaurant and I tried a sietan burger, which is a wheat gluten meat subsitute. It was okay, but I prefer meat. We went to Forever Yogurt afterwards because I'm addicted to froyo and now my aunt is as well.
That week was my first week of classes which was pretty good. My first class was History of Sex in America which is very interesting. We started talking about sexuality in the 19th century. Sex was even more taboo back then and because of it, everyone talked about it secretly. We discussed the Comstock Laws which banned the use of "obscene" language in public. My next class was a honors class, Religious World Views and Ethical Perspectives. One nice thing about that class is half the people in it are friends of mine from my dorm. It's more interesting than I thought and the teacher is very enthusiastic about the topic which is always nice. The next day, I have Spanish. My teacher is really cool and it's a nice class, but the themes that we talk about are awful. We keep talking about the differences between the genders and it's terribly heteronormative and encourages stereotypical gender roles which makes me crazy. Plus, the textbook was made last year which doesn't make sense to me. The other downside to that class is I have to have it on Fridays as well. My last class is another honors class, Rhetoric and Composition. It's basically and English and writing class. My teacher's really cool and we talk about interesting things. We're working on research papers and we get to write about any current issue that's important to us, so I'm writing about sexual assault on college campuses.
I don't think much else happened that week. I watched She's the Man in a friend's room. I also attempted to bleach my hair. It made me nervous because I had never dyed my hair any other color besides red. I did it in the bathroom of my dorm which has no windows. The fumes made me a bit dizzy and burned my eyes, but I was okay. As you can see, it didn't quite work as expected. It bleached my roots that were my natural color and only lightened the parts that were already dyed red which now look kind of orange, but I kind of like it. It reminds me a bit of Hayley Williams. So far, this quarter is going pretty well :)
